MEET CAREY DAVIS

IMG_0669.JPG
  • Retired

  • Former Mayor San Bernardino, CA:  2013-2018

  • Successfully led the city through bankruptcy

  • Converted City to a more effective modern governing structure

  • Married 50 years

  • 4 Children

  • 14 Grandchildren

  • 3 Great grandchildren

After my wife and I retired, we decided to move to Mesa in 2019 because two of our four children, seven of our fourteen grandchildren and two of our three great grandchildren live in Arizona.  We believe Mesa’s conservative culture is primarily family oriented as evidenced by the many city amenities that support families. However, my analysis of Mesa’s financial picture does not match up with what I believe to be conservative fiscal policies.

As I reviewed the City’s spending pattern from 2009 through 2023, I discovered the City had over spent General Governmental revenues by nearly $1.2 billion and transferred over $1.5 billion from the utility funds to close this overspending gap.  This overspending in my opinion does not reflect conservative fiscal policy and I believe over burdens Mesa rate payers.

I left the business world and was elected Mayor of San Bernardino, California in 2013 after the city filed for bankruptcy in 2012.  My background as a CPA and corporate controller provided me the experience necessary to lead the city successfully through bankruptcy.

In my opinion Mesa needs to change its government overreach policies to “Government for the People.” My goal as mayor is to build consensus and put the city back on track towards conservative fiscal policies of spending within its means.

“Mesa’s pioneer heritage is still very central to its culture and family values.”
